A Comprehensive Introduction to Psychological Trauma for Substance Use Disorder Treatment Professionals

Module One: Trauma and the Individual This one hour online module will assist substance use disorder professionals in understanding how trauma impacts individuals, as well as how individuals attempt to cope with traumatic experiences. Particular emphasis is placed on the connection between trauma and substance use. Module Two: Trauma and Relationships This one hour online module will assist substance use professionals in understanding the impact of trauma on relationships. The connection between past trauma, parenting, substance use, and intimate partner violence will be reviewed. Module Three: Supporting Recovery from Trauma This one hour module will assist substance use professionals in understanding and implementing trauma-informed care within the context of substance use disorder treatment. The four principles of trauma informed care as well as the components of trauma informed care will be reviewed. Module Four: Secondary Trauma and Self Care This one hour module will explore the issues of secondary, or vicarious trauma, and the development of resilience among substance use professionals. How secondary trauma presents itself as an occupational hazard, how to cope with it, and strategies to develop resilience to prevent it will be presented.
